MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and Muhammadiyah signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Muhammadiyah headquarters, Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, July 22. The agreement focuses on the sustainable use, management, and restoration of forest resources.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir emphasized the importance of moderate principles and a responsible approach to forest management.
“Forest management should prioritize a moderate path. I believe this is a fair and constructive approach that can guide the development of Indonesia, including in the forestry sector,” said Haedar.
Haedar stressed that protecting nature is a shared responsibility, not only for the government but also for all elements of society. He encouraged both leaders and communities to manage the natural wealth of Indonesia wisely.
“Our country is rich in natural resources and biodiversity. We should use these wisely, making sure not to cause harm. When there is damage, we should be committed to restoring it,” said Haedar.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni agreed that good forest governance depends heavily on leadership, particularly those in decision-making roles.
“Forest destruction often results from the actions of those in power, who approve policies with long-term impacts,” said the Minister.
Raja Juli Antoni explained several strategic programs run by the Minister, namely the Designated Forest Area for Special Purposes, social forestry initiatives, and carbon trading. These initiatives are designed to support national environmental goals programs being developed by the ministry.
Raja Juli also invited all elements of society, including Muhammadiyah, to actively support the government’s environmental efforts.
“We hope this MoU will be valuable for all of us, and especially for the sustainability of our forests,” added Raja Juli Antoni.
This partnership marks a shared commitment by the Ministry of Forestry and Muhammadiyah to environmental conservation. Both parties expressed their hope that all Indonesians will take part in creating a greener, more sustainable, and more just future for the country.
