MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Chairperson of Muhammadiyah and Press Council Member Busyro Muqoddas strongly criticized recent threats against journalists, calling them an attack on democracy.
His statement came in response to an incident where a Tempo magazine journalist was intimidated. Busyro described such acts as attempts to silence the media, which goes against the fundamental values of democracy.
Busyro stressed that media criticism should never be met with threats. Instead, it should be seen as a crucial part of democracy.
He explained that the media plays an essential role in educating the public, and fostering critical thinking helps strengthen democracy. Through constructive and objective criticism, journalism contributes to a better and more transparent government.
“This magazine, through its political coverage, engages in criticism to strengthen democracy. Democracy is about governance that is fair, transparent, and truly serves the people’s needs,” said Busyro at the Islamic Center of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) on Tuesday, March 25.
Busyro warned that a democracy cannot thrive if those in power refuse to listen to criticism. He urged both journalists and the public to stay vigilant and ensure that democratic values are upheld.
During this sacred month of Ramadan, Busyro also reminded Muslims to reflect on Islamic teachings, which emphasize wisdom an balance. He encouraged them to make the most of the remaining days of Ramadan by engaging in spiritual practices such as i’tikaf, night prayers, and repentance.
“Let’s use this time for i’tikaf, praying, seeking forgiveness, and reading the Quran,” said Busyro urged.
He concluded by reminding that Ramadan is a time for self-reflection and seeking forgiveness for both intentional and unintentional mistakes.
