MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – In a sermon delivered at the At Tanwir Mosque, Jakarta on Tuesday, March 26, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Dadang Kahmad emphasized the importance of tolerance as enshrined within the Quran.
Dadang specifically highlighted Al An’am verse 52, which clearly prohibits Muslims from disrupting the worship practices of others, regardless of their faith or place of worship.
“The Quran teaches us respect. We must not disturb anyone engaged in prayer, no matter their God or the time of day,” ,” Dadang explained.
He further elaborated on the verse, underscoring the beauty of the Quran’s message on tolerance. It goes as far as condemning those who intentionally interfere with another’s worship as oppressors.
The Quran’s message of respect extends beyond religious practices. Dadang pointed to Al An’am verse 108, which forbids Muslims from forbidding others from worshipping their deities. In a world rich with diverse faiths, the Quran, from its very inception, has offered guidance on how to live together in harmony.
However, Dadang acknowledged the ongoing issue of religious disrespect. He attributed this, in part, to a lack of engagement with religious scripture among some Muslims. The Quran, he stressed, is a book that promotes not only a strong connection with God but also positive relationships with others.
In light of this, Dadang urged Muslims to use Ramadan as a time to deepen their connection with the Quran. He believes that sincere engagement with the scripture will unlock its hidden wisdom.
Dadang cautioned that simply reading the Quran isn’t enough. This Ramadan, we may not only recite the verses, but also strive to understand their meaning. By doing so, Muslims can embody the Quran’s message of tolerance and respect for all faiths.
