MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Syafiq Mughni emphasized that Wasathiyah (moderation) is the best approach in Islam, particularly in driving change. As the world evolves, people should adapt and actively contribute to shaping these changes.
Syafiq explained that Wasathiyah promotes progress by improving unfavorable conditions and enhancing what is already good. This principle aligns with modernism and reformism, making it a key pillar of Muhammadiyah vision.
“Extremes in any aspect often lead to imbalance. That is why maintaining a middle-ground approach, as taught in Wasathiyah, is the best way to navigate life, including in ideological matters,” said Syafiq in the preaching at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ) on Friday, March 7.
Syafiq further elaborated that Wasathiyah applies to economic and political ideologies, positioning itself between two extremes, capitalism on one side and communism on the other. It advocates for democratic socialism or the welfare state model, striving for collective well-being while respecting individual rights.
Supporting this view, Ai Fathimah Nur Fuad noted that Muhammadiyah sets itself apart from other Islamic movements through its continuous growth and commitment to renewal.
“Muhammadiyah is known for always evolving and introducing new ideas, reflecting its progressive spirit,” said Ai.
Since its founding, Muhammadiyah has embodied Wasathiyah Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islamic Moderation), responding to changes in society, politics, and the economy.
Meanwhile, another speaker Atiyatul Ulya emphasized that the Qur’an describes Muslims as Ummatan Wasathan (a moderate community), highlighting their role in maintaining fairness and excellence.
She also pointed out that Wasathiyah has 13 key pillars, one of which is family stability. Maintaining strong families, she explained, is essential for upholding religious and humanitarian values while ensuring a balanced and harmonious life.
