MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah officially proclaims 1 Ramadan 1444 H on Thursday, 23 March 2023, 1 Shawwal 1444 H on Friday, 21 April 2023, and 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1444 H on Monday, 19 June 2023.
At a press conference on Monday (6/2) at the Muhammadiyah Office of Yogyakarta, Secretary of Muhammadiyah Muhammad Sayuti declared “The Enactment of Reckoning of Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul-Hijjah 1444 H”.
At the press conference were also the President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir, the Chairman of Muhammadiyah for Tarjih and Tajdid Syamsul Anwar, and Vice Chair of the Muhammadiyah Council for Tarjih and Tajdid Oman Fathurrohman.
According to Syamsul Anwar, a difference of the beginning of Ramadan may not occur, but Shawwal and Dhul-Hijjah may. For one reason, Muhammadiyah applies a reckoning method (hisab hakiki wujudul hilal) while the Indonesian government uses criteria of the Ministers of Religion of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS).
“The MABIMS criteria are the height of the new moon of 3 degrees and elongation of 6.4 degrees in determining the beginning of the Hijri month,” mentioned Syamsul Anwar.
Furthermore, the President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir said that the difference might not trigger division since Indonesian Muslims have experienced dealing with the dissimilarity.
It is not new for Muslims; it generates respect, tolerance, honor, and wisdom for differences.
“It may not trigger division among Indonesian Muslims because it is regarding ijtihad which becomes part of the journey of Muslims to understand, respect, and appreciate one another,” said Haedar.
In addition, the complete enactment (written in Indonesian) is accessible here.
