MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The world is grieving. A catastrophic earthquake hit Turkey and Syria and shook neighboring countries. The first earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 jolted Gaziantep, southeastern Turkey, on Monday (06/02) at 04.17 am local time. Later, a 7.6 magnitude quake centered in Kahramanmaras struck the region.
At least 3,000 citizens in Turkey and Syria were killed, 14,500 injured, and 4,900 buildings devastated, reported the Disaster and Emergency Presidency (AFAD) of Turkey on Monday evening (06/02).
Muhammadiyah through Lazismu (the Muhammadiyah zakat management body), Muhammadiyah Aid, and the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) will fundraise and distribute aid from Indonesian people to the disaster-affected people om Turkey and Syria. With the spirit of One Muhammadiyah One Response (OMOR), all Muhammadiyah elements will go hand in hand to give their best.
Director of Fundraising of Lazismu Edi Muktiono said that the Lazismu collaborates with the Lazismu of the Muhammadiyah Special Branch (PCIM) of Turkey, and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Ankara to identify the earthquake victims, particularly Indonesian people in Turkey. Indeed, the earthquake-affected people urgently need winter clothes and blankets.
“It’s winter in Turkey, and these days are the coldest. Lazismu must help the people to survive in the cold weather. Most of them need a family kit and winter clothes because they must evacuate to places with little heating equipment,” said Edi.
“Lazismu invites all Indonesian people to assist our brothers and sisters in Turkey through Lazismu. Donate through Lazismu. We will always give reports of your donation,” said Edi.
Edi wished that disaster-affected people could get assistance and may be strong. “Let’s pray for the people, and may they remain strong and accept the calamities from Allah. We hope get assistance from various parties soon,” said Edi.
