MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SIDOARJO – The people of Indonesia should always uphold tolerance and the values of unity in a country known for its remarkable diversity.
Agung Danarto, the Chairman of Muhammadiyah, emphasizes that differences should not create distance, but rather be viewed as opportunities to understand and get to know one another. Muhammadiyah believes that diversity is inevitable, but unity is essential.
“We must preserve unity while recognizing and embracing diversity,” said Agung during the inauguration of the Regional Board of Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah in Sidoarjo on Saturday (10/6).
Furthermore, two of the largest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, have demonstrated how to navigate diversity while maintaining unity.
With the upcoming political contest in Indonesia in 2024, NU and Muhammadiyah will work together to ensure a conducive environment and prevent societal polarization based on differing political views, as seen in the 2019 general elections.
“Muhammadiyah recently made a reciprocal visit to the NU Office, aiming to strengthen the role of Islamic organizations, particularly in the approach to the general elections,” stated Agung.
Hence, it is expected that leaders of Islamic organizations, not only NU and Muhammadiyah but also interfaith organizations, from the central board to the grassroots level, can contribute to preserving unity.
“Muhammadiyah has always emphasized togetherness and the spirit of Islamic brotherhood,” added Agung.
While there may still be challenges in practicing unity, fostering good interfaith relations will enable religious organizations to overcome these obstacles.
