‘Aisyiyah Treatise of Progressive Women Has Three Core Ideological Principles

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANDUNG — Islam, in its core values, deeply respects both women and men without any discriminatory bias. They stand as equals in the eyes of Allah, sharing the responsibility as servants and stewards entrusted with the growth of knowledge and the betterment of the universe (al-Hujurat: 13, at-Taubah: 71, an-Nisa: 32,124, Ali ‘Imran: 190-195, and an-Nahl: 97).

During the Subuh Mengaji Program on Wednesday (17/1), Erni Zuhriyat, a member of the Muhammadiyah Council for Islamic Propagation, emphasized that ‘Aisyiyah, as an extension of the preaching mission, remains committed to embodying the principles of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam).

With strong determination, ‘Aisyiyah aims to uphold the teachings of Islam, known as dīn al-ḥadhārah, aspiring to foster a superior civilization that not only honors women but also advances the collective life of humanity. The inspiration is drawn from a profound understanding of Quranic verses, especially Surah an-Nahl [16]: 97, emphasizing equality and identical opportunities for both believing men and women.

In their pursuit of a better life, ‘Aisyiyah strategically formulated the Treatise on Progressive Women during the Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah Congress (Muktamar) held in Solo in 2022. Erni explained that this document is grounded in three core ideological principles.

First, ‘Aisyiyah’s inception is deeply rooted in the foundational Islamic values of equality and progress for women. The belief is that Islam inherently endows men and women with equal rights and opportunities to contribute to societal progress.

Second, the historical evolution of ‘Aisyiyah spanning over a century stands testament to the unwavering commitment of women within this movement. Their endeavors epitomize a fervent pursuit of a meaningful life and the ultimate reward from Allah, as stipulated in the Qur’an.

Third, the creation of the Treatise on Progressive Women involves a comprehensive review of various ideological documents pertaining to women within the framework of Muhammadiyah. By understanding the contemporary needs of women, ‘Aisyiyah aspires to articulate perspectives that align with the exigencies of the current era.

This Treatise isn’t just a collection of words; it’s a poignant reflection of the unyielding spirit of Muslim women, ceaselessly engaging in the pursuit of knowledge, actively participating in the public sphere, and manifesting their intellectual, spiritual, and practical potential. The ultimate goal is to carve out a distinctive civilization across all facets of life, shaping a society and nation characterized by advancement, justice, prosperity, dignity, and sovereignty.

With the Treatise on Progressive Women, ‘Aisyiyah reaffirms the pivotal role and substantial contributions of women in fostering positive transformations. This document isn’t merely a guide; it stands as a tangible manifestation of the tireless spirit propelling women towards progressive ideals.
