Muhammadiyah Announces Dates for Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Central Board of Muhammadiyah has officially declared the commencement dates for Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH, following calculations by the Muhammadiyah Council for Fatwa and Islamic Renewal.

Secretary of Muhammadiyah Muhammad Sayuti at a press conference on Saturday, January 20, mentioned that Muhammadiyah applies a reckoning method (hisab hakiki wujudul hilal) to enact the dates.

Muhammadiyah, relying on astronomical observations, determines that the new moon indicating the beginning of Ramadan 1445 AH is sighted on Sunday, March 10, 2024. The conjunction takes place at 16:07:42 Western Indonesian Standard Time. In Yogyakarta, the moon’s visibility at sunset is +00° 56′ 28″. The crescent is observed in most Indonesian regions at sunset on March 10, 2024, except in specific areas. Consequently, the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH in Indonesia falls on Monday, March 11, 2024.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, the new moon for Syawal 1445 AH has not been sighted. However, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 01:23:10 Western Indonesian Standard Time, the crescent is visible. In Yogyakarta, the moon’s height at sunset on April 9, 2024, is +06° 08′ 28″, signifying its visibility. The crescent is above the horizon at sunset in Indonesia. Consequently, the first day of Syawal 1445 H in Indonesia is on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

However, its height at sunset on June 6, 2024, in Yogyakarta is -03° 32′ 39″, indicating that the crescent has not formed. Moreover, it is below the horizon in Indonesia at sunset. The age of the moon for Zulkaidah 1445 AH is completed (istikmal), confirming it as a 30-day month. In Indonesia, the first day of Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH is on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH) falls on Sunday, June 16, 2024, and Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH) is on Monday, June 17, 2024.

This announcement is crucial for Muslims as it provides clarity on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and the subsequent celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
