Inspired by Ahmad Dahlan: Muhammadiyah Tradition of Translating Faith into Action

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, PONOROGO — Muhammadiyah has once again been recognized for its significant contributions to the development of social and humanitarian facilities. The organization received the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2024, a prestigious international honor.

Haedar Nashir, President of Muhammadiyah, saw the award as a powerful validation of the organization’s unwavering commitment to social welfare. He traced this commitment back to 1923, when Muhammadiyah established its first hospital, now known as the PKU Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta. This groundbreaking institution, the only hospital owned by indigenous Muslims at the time, marked the beginning of Muhammadiyah journey in providing crucial social and humanitarian services.

Beyond healthcare, Muhammadiyah has actively constructed homes for the poor and orphans, exemplifying its dedication to alleviating various societal needs. Today, these diverse social initiatives have flourished, boasting both impressive quality and quantity.

Guiding Muhammadiyah work is a core set of values, with Islam at the very heart. But for Muhammadiyah, Islam transcends mere worship, faith, and morality. It encompasses worldly affairs as well. Haedar emphasized their vision of Islam as a religion that prioritizes not just spiritual growth but also humanity and worldly actions that bring tangible benefits to society.

He further underscored that for Muhammadiyah, Islam is more than just teachings; it’s a religion that demands action. He believes that even the deepest understanding of religion holds no real value unless translated into concrete deeds. He drew inspiration from Kiai Dahlan, one of Muhammadiyah founders, who devoted eight months to teaching the Quran chapter Al-Asr until his students truly embodied its message in their daily lives.

Haedar’s message resonated, urging all Muhammadiyah cadres, members, supporters, and citizens to keep the spirit of charity alive, in line with the Islamic values that encourage tangible actions for the betterment of humanity.

“Let the spirit of charity never die,” he declared. “Let us not allow the existence of Muhammadiyah institutions to diminish our individual acts of charity. We serve through Muhammadiyah, and at the same time, we engage in good deeds through donations, alms, and endowments.”

With unwavering conviction, Muhammadiyah remains committed to serving its communities through various impactful initiatives. The organization strives to create positive change and weave humanity into the fabric of every step it takes.
