MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, ABU DHABI – The Central Board of Muhammadiyah expressed its gratitude for receiving the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2024. Muhammadiyah truly received Allah’s blessings for this Award.
The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity which was given to Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama was unexpected and a blessing for these two movements.
“We are increasingly enthusiastic to continue working optimally in carrying out humanitarian roles at local, national, regional and international levels,” said Haedar Nashir at the award ceremony on February 5 at the Founder’s Memorial in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
We dedicate this Zayed Award specifically to the world of universal humanity who works tirelessly to create brotherhood, peace, kindness, tolerance, wisdom and progress for all people without discrimination.
“We will continue to increase cooperation with various parties at the global level, especially with the Higher Community of Human Fraternity (HCHF) and the Muslim Council of Elders (Majelis Hukama Al-Muslimin) in the roles of universal fraternity and humanity; specifically which promotes wisdom, justice, independent and moderate values and character in the world,” said Haedar.
Muhammadiyah, as an Islamic movement since its establishment in 1912, is present for human fraternity for all people. Muhammadiyah is based on Al-Ma’un theology and has deep historical experience of a moderate Islamic movement in promoting a way to live together in an open-minded, tolerant, humanitarian roles, and peaceful environment in spite of the diversity of religions, ethnicities, cultures and social groups within communities in Indonesia.
“In Muhammadiyah view, Islamic da‘wa is an effort to implement Islam in real life as a means of social transformation towards progress, kindness, justice, welfare, and the fulfillment of public interest regardless of race, ethnicity, social group, religion, gender, etc.,” said Haedar.
Muhammadiyah’s progressive approach to Islam is called “Islam Berkemajuan” or “Progressive Islam”. Muhammadiyah continuously strives to present Islam and Islamic da‘wa as a mercy to all of the world. Islam as a religion of rahmatan li al-‘ālamīn in real life.
“Muhammadiyah develops human fraternity in community life through building educational institutions, health institutions, social care, economic empowerment, community development and other efforts. We call this movement “Muhammadiyah for All”. In the eastern part of Indonesia, such as Papua and East Nusa Tenggara, where Muslims are minority, the Muhammadiyah has built inclusive institutions (including four universities in Papua and two universities in NTT). Muhammadiyah promote social integration for local citizens who are mostly Christians and Catholics,” said Haedar.
In a global context, Muhammadiyah has played an important role in conflict resolution in the southern Philippines and southern Thailand. Muhammadiyah has run humanitarian programs in Rohingya and Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. Muhammadiyah also built a Madrasa in Beirut for Palestinian children and one school in Rahine for Rohinhya children. All of this is motivated by humanity and awareness that in modern civilization, all human beings deserve happy life and peaceful coexistence without any discrimination, suffering, and oppression.
“The efforts of the Muhammadiyah for human fraternity are basically the realization of its spirit to present Islam as a religion of action and enlightenment, Islam as Dīn al-‘amal wa al-tanwīr. Islam is a religion that continuously inspires liberative, empowering actions, and improves human life. This spirit of humanity is also based on the values of Islam as “Dīn al-Salām”, that is religion of peace, human life safety, and human fraternity for all,” said Haedar.
