MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, DEMAK – In response to the devastating floods that have plagued Demak Regency, Central Java, since early February, Muhammadiyah has mobilized its resources to provide relief to affected communities.
The flooding, triggered by a combination of a breached river embankment and days of heavy rainfall, began on February 5, 2024. Wasting no time, the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) and the Muhammadiyah Department for Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah Management (Lazismu) of Central Java, sprang into action.
As an initial response, an emergency relief package worth IDR 50,000,000 was distributed to those in immediate need. This package included essential supplies such as cash assistance, food packages containing Rendangmu (Muhammadiyah processed meat product) and rice, and other necessities.
Expressing his deep concern for the flood victims, Dwi Swasana Ramadhan, Chair of the Lazismu of Central Java, extended his gratitude to all those involved in the relief efforts. Looking ahead, Lazismu has instructed its regional branches to launch fundraising campaigns specifically dedicated to supporting the Demak flood response.
The support for Demak doesn’t stop there. MDMC and Lazismu of the Muhammadiyah Regional Board of Yogyakarta also dispatched a team to join forces with their counterparts from Central Java. The combined team set up a central Service Post at the At Taqwa Mosque in Karangwaru Lor, streamlining their response efforts.
This swift and coordinated response from Muhammadiyah highlights the organization’s unwavering commitment to supporting communities in times of crisis. With ongoing fundraising efforts and dedicated volunteers on the ground, Muhammadiyah continues to play a vital role in alleviating the suffering of those affected by the Demak floods.
