MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muslims revere the Quran, the holy book revealed in Ramadan, not just for its religious significance, but also for its potential to benefit all of humanity and the environment. Hamim Ilyas, Chair of the Muhammadiyah Council for Fatwa and Islamic Renewal, explored this concept during a speech at the Islamic Center of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) on March 20th.
Hamim explained that the Quran’s true value extends beyond mere belief. Surah Yusuf verse 3, for example, highlights how the Quran’s very revelation stems from Allah’s love for all creation. This love, Himan explains, translates into a desire for the betterment of all beings.
The Quran, revealed in Arabic, serves as a guide towards rationality, as emphasized in Surah Az Zukhruf verse 3. “By accepting the Quran,” Hamim said, “we become ‘takilun’ – rational beings. In Islamic interpretations, ‘takilun’ is understood as ‘tafhamun’ – to understand.”
This understanding, according to scholar Ibnu Zahid, is a product of faith. By internalizing the Quran’s message, individuals can develop the capacity to think critically about Islam and its application in their lives. Ultimately, this deeper understanding empowers them to lead more fulfilling lives.
Hamim further elaborated on how the Quran’s teachings go beyond mere belief. “The Quran equips us to comprehend religion and contemplate its teachings,” he said, “ultimately leading to a life that benefits not only humanity but all of God’s creations.”
The Quran, Hamim explained, emphasizes the importance of good deeds, both those that improve our earthly lives and those that secure our place in the hereafter. In essence, Islam advocates for a holistic approach to faith, one that values both belief and righteous action.
