MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — The Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Saad Ibrahim emphasized the profound role of the Quran in addressing mental health issues. Saad Ibrahim cited Quranic verses that mention the word “syifa” (healing), such as those in Surah Yunus 57, Al-Isra 82, and Fussilat 44, to support his claim that the Quran becomes a powerful remedy for both physical and psychological ailments.
Said Ibrahim asserted that mental health forms the foundation of overall well-being, a perspective aligned with the views of Islamic scholars like Ibn Sina. This stands in contrast to the Aristotelian notion that physical health precedes mental health. In the Islamic context, a healthy mind is seen as essential for a healthy body.
“Ibn Sina criticized Aristotle’s view. The truth is that mental health is the foundation of physical health. Therefore, the soul must be healed first,” said Saad in the Subuh preaching on Sunday, September 15.
To foster mental well-being, Saad encouraged Muslims to incorporate daily Quranic recitation and reflection into their lives. He recommended a systematic approach, beginning with Surah Al-Fatihah and progressing through to Surah An-Nas, rather than a random selection of verses. This method, he believes, will motivate individuals to complete a full recitation of the Quran.
“We should make it a daily habit to recite and study the Quran sequentially. Insha Allah, by reciting regularly, we will gain greater benefits, including healing for the soul,” said Saad.
Saad further noted that this sequential approach can serve as a therapeutic process, as the divine promise in Surah Ash-Shu’ara 80: “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.”
While acknowledging the importance of medical treatment, Saad stressed the unparalleled healing power of the Quran. Healing from Allah is absolute, and doctors and medical efforts are recommended means. However, the role of the Quran as a source of tranquility and spiritual healing should not be overlooked.
“Let us make the Quran recitation a daily practice, for it contains extraordinary healing power,” said Saad.
