MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, RIAU – Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau (UMRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, establishing a full scholarship program for Palestinian students. The initiative includes coverage of tuition fees, living expenses, and accommodation.
The MoU was signed during the university’s orientation week for new students on Tuesday, September 17, at the UMRI.
UMRI Rector Saidul Amin highlighted the historical relations between Palestine and Indonesia.
“Palestine was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Indonesia, and we are deeply grateful,” said Amin.
As a tangible expression of support, UMRI will offer full scholarships to Palestinian students. In addition to tuition fees, the university will provide on-campus accommodation to facilitate their studies.
“This is a way for us to support Palestine, which is facing difficult circumstances. We also strongly condemn all forms of colonialism, including the occupation of Palestine,” added Amin.
Beyond the Palestinian scholarship program, UMRI has also offered scholarships for international students.
“We signed MoUs with universities in Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. International students from these counties will receive living allowances and accommodations in UMRI’s student housing,” said Amin.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Zuhair Al-Shun expressed his gratitude for UMRI’s initiative.
“I would like to thank the Rector of UMRI for this invitation. Currently, there are 22 Palestinian students studying in Indonesia. I hope that more Palestinian students can study at UMRI. Despite differences in culture, language, and traditions, these are not obstacles,” said Zuhair Al Shun.
Zuhair Al-Shun emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinians and the need for continued international support.
“Approximately 40,000 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israeli attacks. We hope that Palestine can achieve independence and end the occupation. Palestine needs the support from Indonesia to continue advocating for our freedom,” said Zuhair Al-Shun.
