MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Muhammadiyah is calling on its members and all people to carry the values of Ramadan into daily life by starting a movement called “energy fasting.” The initiative was introduced by Hening Parlan, Deputy Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Council for Environmental Preservation, during the Gerakan Subuh Mengaji held virtually on Friday, April 11.
Hening explained that “energy fasting” involves making conscious, everyday choices to conserve energy and help protect the environment. This can be as simple as turning off lights, air conditioners, fans, and other electronics when they’re not in use, unplugging devices, and using water more efficiently.
“Energy fasting is a commitment, both individually and collectively, to be more efficient in our use of electricity and water—just like how we practiced self-control during Ramadan,” she said.
She emphasized that if all Muhammadiyah members, along with those in ‘Aisyiyah and Muhammadiyah institutions across Indonesia, adopt these habits, the impact could be significant.
“Imagine if all our mosques, offices, schools, campuses, hospitals, and other Muhammadiyah facilities practiced energy fasting. It may seem small, but together it’s a big step toward using cleaner, renewable energy and protecting the earth,” added Hening.
She also highlighted that this movement is more than just saving on energy bills. It’s about living out the values of faith by taking care of the planet.
“This is something we hope becomes a habit within Muhammadiyah and among the wider community. It’s part of our responsibility to shift toward a more sustainable way of life,” she said.
The Gerakan Subuh Mengaji event brought together Muhammadiyah members from various regions, creating a space for reflection on how caring for the environment can be part of religious practice.
Hening closed by encouraging everyone to start with small, mindful actions. “If we all do our part, even the simplest efforts can lead to big changes for the future of our planet,” she said.
