Agung Danarto: Knowledge and Literacy Are the Foundations of Civilization

Agung Danarto, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Central Board

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, NORTH MALUKU– Agung Danarto, a Chairperson of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, underscored the central role of knowledge and literacy in shaping civilization during a recent academic ceremony at Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku (Universitas Muhammadiyah Maluku Utara/UMMU).

Speaking at the inauguration of a new professor and the installation of the university’s rector for the 2026–2030 term, Agung offered a broader reflection on the meaning of learning. The event took place at the Haji Abdullah Tjan Hoatseng Auditorium on Thursday (2/4).

Focusing on the theme of learning, he emphasized that intellectual pursuit and a strong culture of literacy form essential pillars of societal progress.

“Islam is a religion that encourages its followers to advance and master civilization,” he said. “A strong tradition of learning—through study, research, and inquiry—is vital for building the welfare of both the community and the nation.”

Learning Beyond Boundaries

Agung linked his message to the first revelation of the Qur’an, found in Surah Al-Alaq (verses 1–5), which calls on humanity to read and seek knowledge. He noted that this command should not be confined to spiritual dimensions alone, but understood in a broader intellectual context.

“The command to learn is universal and absolute,” he said. “It knows no boundaries—whether knowledge comes from the West, the East, the North, or the South. All of it should be studied.”

This perspective, he argued, reflects Islam’s openness to diverse fields of knowledge, encouraging المسلمين to engage with global intellectual traditions.

Moreover, Agung highlighted the importance of grounding knowledge in tauhid, or the oneness of God. He explained that the pursuit of knowledge should strengthen faith and devotion while also benefiting others.

“Those who continue to learn will see their faith and piety increase,” he said. “When knowledge is rooted in tauhid, it becomes a source of blessing.”

In this sense, knowledge is not merely an intellectual endeavor but also a moral and spiritual responsibility.

A Call to Build Civilization

In conclusion, Agung’s remarks served as a reminder that building civilization is an ongoing obligation. For Muslims, he suggested, advancing knowledge and literacy is not optional—it is essential.

By fostering a culture of learning that integrates intellectual rigor with spiritual values, he argued, society can move toward a more just, prosperous, and enlightened future. (Bhisma)
