Ahmad Dahlan’s Visionary Contributions Continue to Inspire Muhammadiyah Path Forward

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah, was a visionary scholar whose profound contributions continue to shape the organization and inspire generations. Although Ahmad Dahlan did not leave extensive writings, his legacy lives on through his innovative actions and practical approach to Islamic teachings.

President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir highlighted that Dahlan’s example came from deep reflection on the Qur’an and his vast knowledge. He transformed the Quranic verses into practical actions, creating changes that had never been seen before within Muslims.

Haedar mentioned Dahlan’s reforms, such as realigning the Qibla direction, introducing modern Islamic education, and applying the message of Surah Al-Ma’un into health, social, and empowerment initiatives.

“These ideas were groundbreaking and had no precedent among Muslims,” said Haedar in the Ideopolitor (Ideology, Politics, an Organization) Forum for Java and Kalimantan at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Monday, January 27.

Ahmad Dahlan’s vision extended further, with the establishment of ‘Aisyiyah, a pioneering women’s movement, and Hizbul Wathan, a Muhammadiyah scout focusing on patriotism and national service.

Haedar emphasized that Dahlan’s legacy has become a defining tradition for Muhammadiyah, one that must be preserved and nurtured by future generations. However, he acknowledged the challenges of maintaining such a significant legacy.

“We need to not only preserve his contributions but also develop new initiatives that align with Muhammadiyah identity as a renewal movement,” said Haedar.

He stressed that innovation is essential to Muhammadiyah mission, as tajdid (the spirit of renewal) requires continuous progress and adaptation. This principle guides Muhammadiyah approach to religion, ideology, organization, and its role in addressing both national and global humanitarian issues.
