MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SRAGEN – In a resounding affirmation of Indonesia’s role as a vanguard of Islamic education, Kiai Saad Ibrahim, Chairman of Muhammadiyah, echoed the insights of renowned scholar Prof. Robert W. Hefner. Hefner has declared that Muhammadiyah is at the forefront of delivering the world’s best Islamic education. Notably, this achievement shines brightly despite Indonesia not being the birthplace of Islam.
Kiai Saad elaborated on this point, acknowledging the commonly held assumption that superior Islamic education resides in the Middle East. However, quoting Hefner, he revealed the innovative essence of Muhammadiyah’s educational paradigm: its masterful integration of religious principles with scientific exploration.
This integrated approach aligns with the synthesis stage of the knowledge dialectic, encompassing thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. It represents a seamless fusion of religious and scientific tenets, fostering a holistic educational environment that is the hallmark of Muhammadiyah’s vision.
Historically, the relationship between science and religion has been marked by periods of tension, particularly following the Islamic Golden Age. Doctrinal objections to scientific exploration and vice versa were not uncommon.
“However, within the context of Islam, there is no inherent conflict between religion and science. In fact, scientific progress within the Islamic world has served to strengthen the foundation of faith,” said Kiai Saad at a parent meeting at SMA Trensains Muhammadiyah Sragen on December 16.
He further illustrated this point by drawing parallels with historical shifts. Initially, an overemphasis on religious ideology constrained scientific advancement. Later, a pendulum swing witnessed religion ceding ground to a booming scientific endeavor in the Western world, culminating in the creation of a secular and highly developed civilization.
Muhammadiyah’s unique approach, meticulously blending religious and scientific principles, transcends the limitations of both dominance and regression. It embodies the synthesis stage of the knowledge dialectic, earning international acclaim for its pioneering role in shaping integrated Islamic education on a global scale.
