MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – In a momentous step towards fostering dialogue and understanding within the Muslim world, Muhammadiyah and the Embassy of Pakistan in Indonesia have forged a unique collaborative path. This partnership culminates in a co-hosted conference on Islam and modernity, poised to convene in Lahore, Pakistan, in September 2024.
This groundbreaking initiative, announced on December 21, 2023, during a meeting between Ambassador Ameer Khurram Rathore of Pakistan and Muhammadiyah’s leadership, signals a shared commitment to navigating the complexities of the modern world through the lens of Islamic values. Distinguished scholars, religious leaders, and prominent activists from both nations will converge in Lahore for this pivotal gathering, exchanging insights and perspectives on a range of crucial topics.
Professor Syafiq Mughni, Chairman of Muhammadiyah, emphasized the conference’s significance in bolstering the longstanding ties between Indonesia and Pakistan. “This endeavor embodies our unwavering dedication to advancing a progressive and inclusive vision of Islam, one that embraces dialogue and critical engagement with the contemporary world,” he affirmed.
The Lahore conference agenda itself promises to be a vibrant tapestry of intellectual discourse. Intricate discussions will delve into the multifaceted relationship between Islam and democracy, exploring the practical and philosophical dimensions of their coexistence. The role of Islam in contemporary societies, its potential for enriching individual and communal life, will also take center stage. Furthermore, the conference aims to tackle the pressing challenges of extremism, seeking shared solutions through rigorous analysis and collaborative action.
Beyond fostering intellectual exchange, this partnership extends to a broader framework of cooperation. Muhammadiyah has graciously accepted an invitation to send a delegation to Lahore, where they will have the opportunity to engage with Pakistani scholars and religious leaders on a more personal level, further strengthening the bonds of understanding and mutual respect.
“We are confident that this collaboration will serve as a beacon of hope, not only for Muslims in Indonesia and Pakistan, but for all communities striving for a more just and equitable world,” Syafiq Mughni concluded. The Muhammadiyah-Pakistan partnership, through its flagship conference and ongoing engagements, stands as a testament to the power of interfaith dialogue in shaping a future where Islamic thought thrives in an inclusive and modern world.
