Deepening Dialogue: Muhammadiyah and U.S. Department of State Exchange Perspectives

Secretary of the Muhammadiyah Department for International Relations and Cooperation Yayah Khisbiyah recently met with officials from the Office of International Religious Freedom (J/IRF), U.S. Department of State at the Muhammadiyah Da’wa Center in Jakarta on February 27. The meeting provided a platform for discussing various critical issues, including the internationalization of Islam in Indonesia.

The discussion centered around the unique character of Islam in Indonesia, as embodied by organizations like Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Both organizations are known for their ability to embrace progressive values while maintaining their strong connection to tradition. This distinctive approach contributes to the unique image of Islam in Indonesia.

As two of the most influential forces in Indonesian Islam, Muhammadiyah and NU play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s Islamic landscape. The meeting explored how these organizations successfully foster diversity within the framework of Islamic values, while simultaneously promoting progress and development across various fields.

Religious freedom emerged as another key topic of discussion. The representatives engaged in a candid conversation about the challenges and opportunities related to religious freedom in Indonesia. This exchange reflected a shared commitment to understanding and addressing complex issues concerning human rights and diversity.

By highlighting the roles of Muhammadiyah and NU and exploring these significant issues, the meeting served as a constructive platform. It not only fostered deeper understanding between the two institutions but also strengthened cooperation and fostered a deeper global understanding of Islam in Indonesia.

The in-depth dialogue between Yayah Khisbiyah and representatives Serena Doan and Leslie Moorman from the J/IRF opened up opportunities for a comprehensive exchange of perspectives. This constructive forum facilitated a better understanding between the two parties on various global issues, including human rights, diversity, and religious freedom.

The success of this meeting extends beyond strengthening bilateral relations between Muhammadiyah and the US. It also lays the groundwork for closer cooperation in tackling shared challenges. This forum serves as a positive step towards fostering sustainable understanding and cooperation between two entities that play crucial roles in promoting diversity and upholding human values.
