EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANDUNG – Muhammadiyah journalism should not merely function as a channel for disseminating information. Importantly, it must promote social change by fostering compassion, advancing humanitarian values, and contributing solutions to social challenges.
This message was conveyed during the launch of the book Philanthropic Journalism: Media and the vision of Social Welfare. The launching took place at the Muhammadiyah University of Bandung. To him, Muhammadiyah journalism must move beyond simply reporting events, but also stimulating social change for greater public benefits.
He explained that the concept of philanthropic journalism is rooted in the commitment to cultivate hope by not only exposing social issues but also encouraging solidarity and creating opportunities for meaningful solutions to humanitarian challenges.
The UM Bandung lecturer noted that Muhammadiyah media possesses a unique strength because it originates from a da’wah movement. That movement has long been dedicated to serving society through education, healthcare, and social welfare initiatives. Accordingly, he argued that its reporting should reflect the Progressive Islam values, placing humanity at the center of its mission.
Educating the Public Rather than Chasing Sensationalism
Roni also stressed that the media plays a significant role in shaping public perception. Therefore, it should prioritize journalism that educates, fosters optimism, and reinforces moral values instead of pursuing sensationalism or viral popularity.
Moreover, UM Bandung Vice Rector Hendar Riyadi argued that journalism must go beyond narratives of sympathy and charity. According to him, the media should cultivate critical public awareness and advocate for social justice so that humanitarian issues become catalysts for real change rather than mere spectacles.
Through this approach, Muhammadiyah media is expected to strengthen its role as an instrument of enlightening Islamic da’wah, promoting optimism while mobilizing compassion and humanitarian action throughout society.
