Lamine Yamal Condemns Anti-Muslim Chant at Spain vs. Egypt Match: “Religion Is Not a Joke”

Lamine Yamal, Professional Footballer

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BARCELONA – Lamine Yamal, the rising star of Spain’s national team, issued a strong statement following a discriminatory incident during a friendly match between Spain and Egypt at the RCDE Stadium early Wednesday (1/4).

The FC Barcelona winger condemned a group of home supporters who chanted anti-Muslim slogans during the match. The incident unfolded when sections of the crowd repeatedly shouted a provocative chant: “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim.”

Although the chant appeared aimed at taunting the opposing team, it drew widespread criticism for promoting religious intolerance and undermining the spirit of fair play in sport.

“It Is Disrespectful and Unacceptable”

In a post on his personal Instagram account, Yamal, who was born on July 13, 2007, responded firmly. As a Muslim representing La Roja, he said the chant was offensive regardless of its intended target.

“I heard the chant in the stadium yesterday. I know it was aimed at the opposing team and not at me personally. However, as a Muslim, it is still disrespectful and cannot be tolerated,” he wrote.

Yamal went further, calling those responsible for the chant “ignorant and racist.” He emphasized that passion for football should not cross into attacks on identity or belief.

“Football is meant to be enjoyed and supported, not used to insult people for who they are or what they believe,” he added.

Praise From Muhammadiyah

Yamal’s stance drew praise from various quarters, including Indonesia. Qaem Aulassyaheid, a member of the Religious Opinion and Reform Council of Muhammadiyah Central Board, commended the young player’s integrity and courage.

“What Lamine Yamal has done deserves recognition,” Qaem said. “A Muslim should have the confidence and firmness to uphold the dignity of their faith, especially when facing discriminatory behavior.”

Despite his disappointment, Yamal struck a measured tone. He thanked supporters who offered positive encouragement and expressed hope that such incidents would not recur.

He concluded his message with a forward-looking note: “See you at the World Cup,” signaling his renewed focus on the game and his ambition to help Spain succeed on the global stage.
