MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir emphasized Islam Wasathiyah (moderation in Islam) as a core principle mentioned on the Treatise of Progressive Islam of Muhammadiyah.
Haedar stated that historical events and the development of civilization have shaped Muhammadiyah into a moderate organization, maintaining balance while staying dynamic and progressive thinking.
“Muhammadiyah should embody a progressive Islamic moderation. When we look at the history of Islamic civilization, we see a long journey of thought and development, not just in religious matters but also in the sciences,” said Haedar in the closing of the Muhammadiyah preaching conducted on Tuesday, March 4, at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).
Haedar noted that Muhammadiyah has long been recognized as both a modern and reformist Islamic movement.
“This movement is what defines Muhammadiyah’s unique identity ideologically, theologically, and practically. Ahmad Dahlan was considered an unconventional reformer because his vision went beyond his time,” explained Haedar.
Haedar further elaborated that Muhammadiyah understanding of Wasathiyah is one of active engagement and responsibility toward humanity (syuhada’ ‘ala an-nas). For Muhammadiyah, progress should continuously adapt to the needs of the times to ensure meaningful contributions to society.
