MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SORONG – President Joko Widodo, alongside President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir, marked a significant milestone by breaking ground for the PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong (a Muhammadiyah hospital) on November 24.
Haedar Nashir mentioned that the hospital constructions had been planned a long time ago, and it was a remarkable day since the plan was finally executed.
“This is a momentous day for us and the people of Papua, particularly Southwest Papua, as we break ground with Mr. President,” said Haedar.
The inauguration of the PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong complements Muhammadiyah contributions in Papua, adding to the four Muhammadiyah higher education institutions and other Muhammadiyah institutions already in operation.
“This is a hospital established by President Joko Widodo through Muhammadiyah, for the people of Papua,” said Haedar.
Haedar expressed his gratitude to President Jokowi and assured him that the PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong would be accomplished as planned and would provide healthcare services to the people.
Besides, President Joko Widodo lauded Muhammadiyah’s holistic approach to service initiatives. He particularly appreciated the unique design of the PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong, integrating a university, hotel, and shopping center.
“I’ve never seen this typical building which integrates a mall, hotel, and hospital. Also, I think that this is the first time that this amazing building will cost only IDR 256 billion, not million,” said Jokowi.
For the construction process, President Jokowi entrusted the responsibility to the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. Following the groundbreaking ceremony, the hospital, with a proportionate allocation from the state budget, is expected to be done by 2024.
Apart from President Joko Widodo and Haedar Nashir, the symbolic button-pressing ceremony to signify the commencement of construction for the PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong was attended by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Acting Governor of Southwest Papua Muhammad Musa’ad, and UNIMUDA Sorong Rector Rustamadji.
