MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, TEMANGGUNG — President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir highlighted Muhammadiyah roles in the development of this nation.
“Muhammadiyah has pioneered enlightening da’wa based on the Qur’an and sunnah while addressing the challenges of the modern world,” said Haedar at the Zam-Zam Building, PKU Muhammadiyah Temanggung, on Saturday, November 23.
In education, Muhammadiyah has established a robust education system, from kindergartens to universities. Several Muhammadiyah educational institutions are acknowledged for their quality and have achieved national recognition.
Furthermore, through its women’s organization, Aisyiyah, Muhammadiyah has struggled for women’s empowerment by providing access to quality education and challenging traditional gender roles.
Haedar also highlighted Muhammadiyah historical contributions, such as the initiative by its founder Ahmad Dahlan to change the direction of prayer towards Mecca based on scientific evidence.
“Despite initial resistance, this effort was widely accepted due to its strong scientific foundation,” said Haedar.
Muhammadiyah unconventional yet Quran-based approach has garnered significant praise.
“A national media survey has shown that the public has highly regarded Muhammadiyah, particularly for its role in fostering diversity and national unity,” said Haedar.
The organization’s influence extends beyond Indonesia. Muhammadiyah Australia College in Australia and Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia are examples of Muhammadiyah global reach.
As Muhammadiyah enters its second century, it continues to be one of the leading Islamic organizations in Indonesia. The upcoming Tanwir National Meeting scheduled for December 4-6, 2024, in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, emphasizes this commitment.
Haedar explained the choice of Kupang, stating, “In eastern Indonesia, Muhammadiyah is the most prominent Islamic organization, playing a significant role in the community.”
For instance, 80 percent of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kupang students are Christians. Indeed, this university is often called “Universitas Muhammadiyah Kristen” (the University of Christian Muhammadiyah).
The Muhammadiyah impact in eastern Indonesia can be observed from the careers of its alumni. Benhur Tomi Mano, the Mayor of Jayapura and a gubernatorial candidate for Papua, is a graduate of a Muhammadiyah junior high school.
“There are even pastors who are alumni of Muhammadiyah schools,” added Haedar.
Through its educational institutions, social initiatives, and commitment to interfaith dialogue, Muhammadiyah continues to make a significant impact on Indonesia and the wider world. Its ability to adapt to changing times while staying true to its core values has reinforced its position as a leading force for positive change.
