MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, KULON PROGO – Haedar Nashir, President of Muhammadiyah, unequivocally affirmed that Islam and its followers pose no threat to Indonesia’s Unitary State.

Haedar illuminated the profound historical contributions of Islam, specifically through Muhammadiyah, in shaping Indonesia’s journey to independence. He underscored that Muhammadiyah’s mission goes beyond the spiritual realm, actively participating in nation-building.

“Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah weren’t just established to guide worship but to embody these principles within the broader context of our national identity and statehood,” Haedar emphasized on Saturday (January 7) in Wates, Kulon Prog .

Reflecting on history, he acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Muhammadiyah and Muslims at large in securing Indonesia’s freedom before and after its proclamation on August 17, 1945.

In contributing to nation-building, Muhammadiyah took tangible steps by establishing educational, healthcare, social, and economic institutions alongside fostering spiritual development.

Addressing the challenges ahead, especially in the 2024 political landscape, Haedar urged Muhammadiyah members to uphold fundamental principles in their actions and decisions.

“Integrity should guide our conduct, steering clear of wrongdoing and fostering a commitment to goodness in every aspect of our lives,” Haedar urged.

Extending this guidance to participants in the 2024 elections, he stressed the importance of fair and ethical conduct, cautioning against corrupt practices during the democratic process.

“I strongly advise candidates against engaging in practices like distributing money, emphasizing that such actions are not conducive to positive outcomes,” he added.

Beyond domestic political considerations, Haedar also addressed the notion of establishing an Islamic state in Indonesia, expressing his disagreement with such ideas. He argued that the collective agreement on Pancasila as the foundational ideology, accompanied by a deep-rooted commitment to the nation’s spiritual and cultural values, should guide Indonesia’s future trajectory.
