MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, which escalated significantly in October 2023, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis. With an estimated 42,000 Palestinian casualties, the situation continues to deteriorate.
In response to this ongoing crisis, the Secretary-General of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti expressed deep sorrow and reaffirmed Muhammadiyah commitment to supporting the Palestinian people.
Through its humanitarian bodies, Lazismu (the Muhammadiyah Department of Charity Management) and Muhammadiyah AID, Muhammadiyah has been providing various forms of assistance to Palestinians, including essential supplies and educational support for children affected by the prolonged conflict.
During a discussion held on Tuesday, October 8, Mu’ti emphasized that Muhammadiyah support for Palestine has been ongoing for many years. This movement has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, particularly in the field of education such as providing access to education for Palestinians.
“Muhammadiyah has been paying close attention to the situation in Gaza, especially in the area of education. Our efforts to assist Palestine predate the recent escalation in October 2023,” said Mu’ti.
To underscore this commitment, Mu’ti highlighted the establishment of two schools in Lebanon for Palestinian children in 2020 and 2022.
“Muhammadiyah focuses on fulfilling a fundamental human right: the right to education for refugees, particularly Palestinian refugees in Beirut,” he explained.
Beyond providing educational opportunities, Muhammadiyah has also been offering scholarships to Palestinian students seeking higher education at Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah universities. Additionally, Muhammadiyah is implementing a peacebuilding program targeting hundreds of Palestinian youth, aimed at equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to build a better future.
