MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The Muhammadiyah Department of Charity Management (Lazismu) launched the “Save Our School” (SOS) program to support quality education in Indonesia. The kick off was conducted on Tuesday, May 6 at the Lazismu Office and carried the theme “National Zakat Movement for Education.”
Muarawati Nurmalinda, a representative of Lazismu, said that education has always been a key focus for Muhammadiyah.
“Since its establishment, Muhammadiyah has posited education as a central priority that contributes to enlightening the nation,” said Muarawati.
She pointed out that many schools are still struggling with inadequate facilities and resources, especially when compared to more established institutions. These schools, she said, need attention and support to provide a better learning environment.
Lazismu, Marawati added, is taking a more active role in education, particularly in the spirit of National Education Day. “This is part of our strategic plan and will be carried out nationwide,” she said.
Muarawati emphasized that this is the right time for all elements of Muhammadiyah to work together to improve education. She also stressed the importance of zakat as an instrument to empower communities.
“We want to raise awareness that zakat can help strengthen education and support social progress,” said Muarawati.
She highlighted that collaboration is key, and that this program is not only part of Lazismu contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also supports Muhammadiyah’s post-congress (Muktamar) focus on grassroots development, especially through schools.
“We hope the Lazismu can encourage more people, especially zakat donors, to take part in supporting education. This is a chance for Muhammadiyah schools to grow as inspiring, safe, and quality spaces for learning, helping build a brighter future for the nation,” expressed Muarawati.
