MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — The Central Board of Muhammadiyah expresses its deep condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, who died in Vatican City on Monday morning, April 21.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir remembered Pope Francis as a kind, humble, and peace-loving figure who had a strong global presence.
“When we met him at the Vatican on February 24, 2024, during the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity ceremony, he welcomed us with warmth, kindness, and even a touch of humor,” said Haedar.
Haedar described Pope Francis as a leader who lived out his motto, Miserando atque eligendo—“Humble but chosen”—through his inclusive and compassionate approach to others.
“Pope Francis was committed to promoting humanity and peace for all people. Together with the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, he received the first Zayed Award. Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama were honored with the same award in 2024, which gave us the opportunity to meet both leaders,” explained Haedar.
Haedar said the world has lost a respected religious figure who dedicated his life to compassion, tolerance, and peace.
“May Pope Francis’s legacy continue to inspire efforts toward a more peaceful and just world, especially at a time when global leadership is often marked by conflict and division,” said Haedar.
