MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Pope Francis is visiting Indonesia on September 3-5, 2024. Due to his visit, the Central Board of Muhammadiyah issues three statements.
First, the Central Board of Muhammadiyah warmly welcomed the visit of Pope Francis to Indonesia. His visit is a great honor for Indonesia, demonstrating his respect for our nation. Despite his demanding schedule, Pope Francis has graciously chosen to undertake this journey, traveling a considerable distance by commercial flight and opting for a modest accommodation. His exemplary conduct becomes a valuable inspiration for national and global leaders.
Second, in the context of interfaith relations, particularly between Islam and Catholicism, the visit of Pope Francis attests the significance of Indonesia and his commitment to fostering and strengthening Catholic-Islamic relations. Together with the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayeb, Pope Francis signed the Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity. This document reflects the shared spirit and commitment of Islam and Catholicism to uphold human dignity and build interfaith cooperation for peace. The planned meeting between Pope Francis and various religious groups highlights his openness to interfaith dialogue and collaboration and promotes Indonesia to the world as a nation rich in diversity and religious and cultural harmony.
Last, as the host nation, Indonesia should welcome and honor the visit of Pope Francis with the warmth and courtesy that reflects our noble culture and civilization. The Indonesian government can leverage this opportunity to engage in dialogue on issues of peace and to articulate the position of Indonesia on global peace. Indonesia should seize this opportunity to take the initiative and play a more proactive role in promoting global peace by seeking a permanent solution for the future of Palestine, involving various parties at the global level.
