MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SUMEDANG — A tremor rumbled through Sumedang, Indonesia, on New Year’s Eve, leaving destruction in its wake. Buildings crumbled, forcing hundreds to flee their homes. Though the earth has settled, the aftermath of the 4.8-magnitude earthquake continues to impact lives. Amidst the hardship, acts of compassion and solidarity shine through, as exemplified by the efforts of Muhammadiyah.
Muhammadiyah of Cirebon Regency, through its Lazismu (the Muhammadiyah Department for Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah Management) of Cirebon, swiftly extended a helping hand. Led by Mohamad Ranudin, the Chairman of Lazismu of Cirebon, they delivered much-needed assistance to the affected communities. Their symbolic contribution included cash and a generous supply of empal gentong, a regional delicacy – a gesture not only providing immediate relief but also a touch of comfort and familiarity in these trying times.
“We call upon all with open hearts to join us in supporting our brothers and sisters affected by the Sumedang earthquake,” Ranudin declared. Lazismu, he assured, had streamlined donation channels, making it easy for anyone to contribute through various platforms or directly at their offices.
Besides, the wider Muhammadiyah network sprang into action. Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) of West Java mobilized volunteers in the vicinity, forming a rapid response team. Ahmad Dahlan, the Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Regional Board of West Java, commended their swift deployment, acknowledging the crucial role they play in providing immediate aid.
“Our MDMC and Lazismu teams,” Dahlan stated with gratitude, “moved with remarkable speed to offer the best possible service to the victims. We remain deeply appreciative of their efforts and continue to provide all necessary support on the ground.”
Lazismu of West Java, under the leadership of Chafid Seffriyadi, echoed this sentiment. He emphasized the importance of collective action in such times of crisis. “Lazismu serves as a vital channel for collecting funds,” Seffriyadi explained, “which will be directed towards emergency response efforts through the Indonesia Siaga program in collaboration with the MDMC.”
His call resonated throughout the organization, prompting Lazismu across the regions to mobilize and collect disaster relief funds. This unwavering commitment ensures that Muhammadiyah stands prepared to support the MDMC in addressing any future disasters that may befall Indonesia.
The Muhammadiyah Coordination Post, established at the Aisyiyah Clinic of Sumedang, serves as a central hub for their ongoing efforts. From assessing the damage and installing communal tents to setting up emergency shelters for displaced residents, their dedication is evident in every step they take.
As Sumedang rebuilds, the spirit of community stands tall. Muhammadiyah’s prompt and empathetic response serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, humanity’s capacity for compassion can illuminate the path forward. Together, with unwavering support and shared determination, Sumedang will rise again, stronger than before.
