MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, PONOROGO – Muhammadiyah takes a stance of active neutrality for the 2024 elections. Emphasizing the crucial need for open communication with all candidates, Abdul Mu’ti, the General Secretary of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, articulated the organization’s position during a speech at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO) on November 19.
This active neutral stance is manifested through initiatives such as the Public Dialogue, an open forum extended to all three pairs of Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates who are set to participate in the forthcoming 2024 elections.
Mu’ti mentioned that the Public Dialogue functions as a platform for Muhammadiyah to enhance political communication and express aspirations.
“The dialog aims to prevent the candidates from having no ideas to develop Indonesia. Muhammadiyah has formulations and visions of strategic issues of religion, national identity, and universal humanity. Thus, the presidential candidates are expected to be mindful,” said Mu’ti.
The formulated aspirations could be a guide for the elected candidates. Muhammadiyah commits to providing both loyal and critical support, underscoring the importance of adherence to laws and established regulations.
“Muhammadiyah will extend its support with the characteristic loyalty-criticism. While supporting them as heads of state and government, we must also be critical to ensure compliance with laws and regulations,” said Mu’ti.
According to Mu’ti, while the presidential and vice-presidential elections hold undeniable significance, they do not represent the entirety of our national priorities. He encourages a positive and fraternal response from the public, particularly within the Muhammadiyah members.
“Bring joy and raise a sense of brotherhood among Indonesians, particularly Muhammadiyah members, in the political contest,” said Mu’ti.
