MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Two elementary school students from Muhammadiyah schools won medals at the 21st International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held in Wenzhou Institute UCAS, China, from October 1-6, 2024.
A sixth-grader from SD Muhammadiyah PK Kottabarat Nismara Pragya Chedrina Agung gained a silver medal, while Hidetoshi Kinan Muhammad from SD Muhammadiyah Sapen, Yogyakarta won a bronze medal.
The competition, which attracted 273 of the brightest young minds from 18 countries, including China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, challenged participants with rigorous mathematics and science problems. Indonesia sent a team of 24 students, 12 each for mathematics and science. In total, Indonesia won 2 silver and 6 bronze medals in mathematics, and 2 silver and 3 bronze medals in science.
Nismara Pragya Chedrina Agung, affectionately known as Geya, expressed her gratitude for her achievement.
“Alhamdulillah, after passing the selection on August 13, 2024, I was finally able to participate in the 21st IMSO in China and win a silver medal. The competition involved solving 25 theory questions in the first round and 13 in the second round, as well as six challenging exploratory problems. All the questions were in English,” said Geya.
Meanwhile, Hidetoshi Kinan Muhammad expressed his gratitude for his achievement and dedicated his medal to Muhammadiyah and Indonesia.
“Alhamdulillah, I tried my best to represent Indonesia, Muhammadiyah, and Yogyakarta,” said Hidetoshi Kinan Muhammad.
To reach this level of competition, both students underwent rigorous selection processes, including participating in national-level Olympiads and intensive training.
