MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, GRESIK – President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir highlighted that, as Indonesia’s democratic system continues to bring about changes in leadership, Muhammadiyah remains committed to its mission of national development through its independent initiatives.
Haedar emphasized that Muhammadiyah commitment to serving the people and the nation does not depend on any specific political leader. He explained that the spirit of self-reliance has been part of Muhammadiyah since its foundation in 1912, and it remains a core principle today.
“For Muhammadiyah, our true source of strength is Allah. When we build hospitals, clinics, and other services, they must be rooted in a higher purpose,” said Haedar in the inauguration of the Central Care Building of Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gresik (RSMG) on April 26.
While Muhammadiyah remains independent, Haedar reaffirmed the organization’s openness to collaboration with the government for the betterment of the nation. This approach aligns with Muhammadiyah guiding principles, which emphasize cooperation for the greater good.
Although often associated with urban areas, Muhammadiyah is active in many remote regions of Indonesia. Haedar pointed out that, in some cases, Muhammadiyah has been the first to establish schools, clinics, and social services in areas where the government has not yet reached.
“For instance, in remote parts of Papua or East Nusa Tenggara, Muhammadiyah has built schools and clinics before the government, showing our invaluable contribution to the country,” he said.
Haedar also stressed that for the government to improve services in sectors like health and education, private organizations like Muhammadiyah must play a key role.
“We build with self-reliance, even in difficult times, and we do it not for profit,” added Haedar.
Haedar called on Muhammadiyah members to maintain their independent spirit, especially in times when government policies may not support the organization or the public.
“All our achievements are the result of our self-reliance. This spirit must never fade. It can overcome anything, such as money, budgets, policies, and new regulations,” said Haedar.
Haedar mentioned that Muhammadiyah dedication to national development dates back even before Indonesia’s independence. When the Dutch colonial government issued the Teachers’ Ordinance, Muhammadiyah continued to build schools and oppose the policy, a protest that eventually led to action from the colonial rulers.
“If the Dutch could listen, surely the Indonesian government can do it as well. However, if they don’t, Muhammadiyah will keep moving forward. We act under the power of Allah, the One above all others,” said Haedar.
Haedar concluded by reaffirming that Muhammadiyah actions are guided by tawhid, the belief in one God. This belief is the foundation of everything the organization does.
