MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — The Central Board of Muhammadiyah expresses its deep condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, who died in Vatican City on Monday morning, April 21, at 07:35 local time.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir said the Pope’s passing is a great loss for the world, especially in the pursuit of peace and humanity.
“We, the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Pope Francis. He was a global religious and humanitarian leader who is humble, compassionate, and committed to human fraternity, social justice, and the values of life,” said Haedar in Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, April 22.
Haedar praised Pope Francis as a figure who consistently promoted universal values that speak to people of all religions, nations, and backgrounds.
“Pope Francis did not only preach the teachings of the Catholic Church, but also shared values that serve as a guide for all of humanity,” said Haedar.
Haedar hoped that today’s leaders would follow the Pope’s example in standing up for justice, compassion, and peace, especially during a time marked by global conflict and unrest.
“On behalf of Muhammadiyah, we hope national and world leaders can learn from Pope Francis’s dedication to human dignity and moral leadership,” he added.
He also emphasized that peace and humanity must be grounded in strong values and lived through real examples.
“True peace can grow among nations and communities. However, it must be built on meaningful values and inspiring leadership,” he said.
Haedar concluded by encouraging future leaders, especially the Pope’s successor, to continue the path Pope Francis walked.
“I believe there are still many world figures from various faiths who share the same vision. Let us work together to create a world of peace, love, and respect for humanity which is free from war, genocide, and aggression,” he said.
