MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has long played a key role in Indonesia’s development, particularly in healthcare. Chairperson of Muhammadiyah dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman highlighted this contribution.
“Muhammadiyah has made significant contributions to this country’s progress. What we do is not just an effort. It is a meaningful service and a noble cause,” Agus stated in the Preaching of Ramadan 1446 AH conducted at the Student Dormitory Ballroom of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Sunday, March 2.
Muhammadiyah mission focuses on three main areas: education, healthcare, and the economy. To further advance these sectors, Agus called for greater participation from Muhammadiyah members in building both the community and the nation.
“We need more Muhammadiyah members to take active roles in strengthening society. Therefore, we can bring Progressive Islam to life in ways that benefit as many people as possible. This is something we should work on together,” explained Agus.
Advancing Healthcare
Agus referenced an idea from dr. Soetomo, previously published in Suara Muhammadiyah, that contrasts Muhammadiyah principles with Darwin’s theory of evolution, which suggests that only the strongest survive.
“Muhammadiyah operates on a foundation of compassion, where the strong have a duty to support and uplift the weak. This principle is at the core of Muhammadiyah approach to healthcare,” said Agus.
Agus encouraged Muhammadiyah healthcare professionals to strive for excellence, following the example of Muhammadiyah higher education institutions.
“We often remind our healthcare workers that Muhammadiyah universities have set outstanding standards. Our hope is that Muhammadiyah healthcare sector can reach the same level of excellence,” said Agus.
To improve healthcare services, Agus emphasized the need to keep pace with modern advancements.
“One of our biggest challenges today is ensuring that Muhammadiyah provides healthcare services that meet the demands of the times. This is a goal we have to achieve together,” he affirmed.
