MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAYAPURA – Universitas Muhammadiyah (UM) Papua becomes the first and only university in Papua to offer a psychology program. The program, established on October 6, 2020, aims to address the growing demand for mental health professionals in the region.
The head of the Psychology Department at UM Papua Muhammad Irwan Putra explained that the decision to establish a psychology program was based on a comprehensive survey that revealed a significant gap in psychology education in Papua.
“Our survey showed that there were no other universities in Papua offering a dedicated psychology program. Existing programs focused more on counseling and were primarily school-based,” he said.
The establishment of the psychology program at UM Papua presents a unique opportunity for graduates to contribute to their community. Irwan noted,
“We see a huge potential for psychology graduates, especially given the increasing need for mental health services,” said Irwan.
The Psychology Department at UM Papua has experienced a surge in interest since its establishment. The department currently boasts nine faculty members with specialized expertise in various areas of psychology.
Graduates of the program can expect a wide range of career opportunities, particularly in Papua where there is a shortage of psychology professionals.
“Psychology is crucial, especially for law enforcement agencies in Papua which currently have a limited number of personnel with psychology backgrounds. With this program, we hope to contribute to addressing this need,” said Irwan.
The Psychology Department at UM Papua offers three specializations: educational psychology, clinical psychology, and industrial and organizational psychology. The department offers both full-time and part-time programs.
