Muhammadiyah Humanitarian Collaboration: Scholarships and Wells for Kenya

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The Central Board of Muhammadiyah provided scholarships and humanitarian aid, sinking two wells, for Kenya.

President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir symbolically handed over the grants to the Ambassador of Kenya to Indonesia, Galma Mukhe Boru, at Masjid At-Tanwir, the Muhammadiyah Da’wah Center, on Monday (August 14).

“This collaboration highlights both humanitarian cooperation and Muhammadiyah’s global outreach. It underscores Muhammadiyah’s inclusive ethos, reaching beyond national borders. Muhammadiyah is for all,” said Haedar in the scholarship and aid handing over accompanied by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy, the Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Syafiq A Mughni, the General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti, representatives of Muhammadiyah-Aisyiyah offices, and the Rector of Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah Higher Education Institutions.

This partnership is a follow-up to the recent visit of Mr. Ambassador to Muhammadiyah. 31 Kenyan students will pursue their higher education in Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah institutions.

According to Haedar Nashir, Muhammadiyah will expand its humanitarian aid and scholarship scope to African regions such as Somalia.

The cooperation would strengthen brotherhood and bilateral relations between African countries and Indonesia. It also represents a mission of Muhammadiyah internationalization.

“The humanitarian aid and scholarships are the implementation of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) and Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy to the whole world),” said Haedar.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador of Kenya to Indonesia Galma Mukhe Boru expressed gratitude for Muhammadiyah’s initiatives and hoped for broader collaboration in human resource development to enhance the quality of life in Kenya. He highlighted that diplomatic relations between the two countries have been in place since 1979.

“To the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, the Chairman of Muhammadiyah, the Secretary General, and the Muhammadiyah Institute for International Relations and Cooperation, I appreciate this collaboration and extend my thanks to Muhammadiyah,” said Galma Mukhe Boru.
