MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SLEMAN – Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Council for Public Health (MPKU) Agus Syamsuddin mentioned that Muhammadiyah, through its first hospital -RS PKU Muhammadiyah- has served communities. The centennial of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta represents a turning point for the rapid and significant development of Muhammadiyah hospitals.
“The hundred years of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Jogja inspires the nation to build public health, and we can collaborate for the health of the nation,” said Agus Syamsuddin in the International Conference on the One Century of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and 14 Years of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping.
The centennial of RS PKU Muhammadiyah portrays the success of a movement of Muhammadiyah instilled by K.H. Ahmad Dahlan and Kiai Sudja’.
RS PKU Muhammadiyah was a clinic established last century in Yogyakarta. It’s a pioneer of the development of 118 Muhammadiyah hospitals throughout Indonesia. Indeed, Muhammadiyah will build a new hospital in Papua. The initiative aims to provide equal access to healthcare throughout Indonesia.
Seeing the development of Muhammadiyah in 1923 when constructing a clinic, Agus Syamsudin said it’s a stepping stone of the next 50-70-year development. Thus, the conference may lead to the renewal and betterment of RS PKU Muhammadiyah to provide health service.
“In the future, we need to work better in three aspects,” said Agus.
First, it’s necessary to improve medical capability and quality of human resources, particularly doctors. Agus encourages Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah universities to offer Faculty of Medicine. Second, Muhammadiyah-Aisyiyah hospitals should work as a team to expand great health services.
“Third, it’s dealing with the expansions of Muhammadiyah hospitals since they are a trait of Muhammadiyah to serve people,” said Agus.
