MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MEDAN — In a landmark milestone for Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), four exceptional women shattered glass ceilings as they were officially inaugurated as professors in a vibrant ceremony on Saturday, December 23. Their inauguration not only marks individual academic triumphs, but also signifies a powerful societal shift in challenging deeply ingrained stereotypes regarding women’s intellectual capacity.
Professor Ida Hanifah, armed with formidable expertise in labor law, Professor Sabrina, a beacon in the field of management, Professor Emilda Sulasmi, a driving force in educational management, and Professor Siti Mujiatun, a pillar of management knowledge, all etched their names into UMSU’s history. Their inauguration resonated with a profound sentiment expressed by Abdul Mu’ti, General Secretary of Muhammadiyah.
“These outstanding achievements by female professors emphatically debunk the outdated myth that women possess lesser intellectual acumen,” said Mu’ti.
Mu’ti further underscored the historical context, highlighting that Islam itself, through figures like Prophet Muhammad’s wife, ‘Aisha bint Abu Bakr, a renowned scholar and narrator of hadith, had long shattered such misconceptions. He emphasized, “We see once again, through the exemplary achievements of these professors, how women possess undeniable intellectual prowess, a truth echoed across history and exemplified by ‘Aisha Radhiallahu Anha.”
Beyond individual accolades, the inauguration carries a broader societal significance. It is expected to serve as a catalyst for inspiring young minds, igniting a passion for academic excellence among women, and gradually dismantling outdated gender stereotypes. Mu’ti eloquently acknowledged this, praising the professors not only for their academic brilliance but also for their adept juggling of motherhood, organizational contributions, and academic duties
“These incredible women are role models who demonstrate the extraordinary feat of balancing family, professional leadership, and academic pursuits. I offer my heartfelt congratulations,” said Mu’ti.
Mu’ti’s optimism for UMSU’s future shone brightly during the ceremony. He expressed unwavering confidence that the university’s trajectory towards academic excellence would continue.
“I firmly believe that UMSU will witness a steady rise in its number of professors, fueled by robust support systems and accelerated pathways for academic advancement,” said Mu’ti.
This historic event transcends being merely a celebration of individual achievements. It signifies a pivotal step towards an educational landscape where inclusivity and merit reign supreme, paving the way for women to reach their full potential in all spheres of life. UMSU’s bold stride forward serves as an inspiration not only within Indonesia but also across the globe, setting a powerful precedent for universities to champion equity and intellectual excellence for all.
