MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BENGKULU – Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu (UMB) recently hosted a group of 40 international students from various countries for a Cross-Cultural Competence Course, held from October 14 to 17, 2024. The program aimed to provide these students with a rich cultural experience, foster their intercultural competence, and enhance their leadership skills.
UMB Vice Rector for Cooperation Onsardi explained that the program was designed to offer more than just classroom learning. Through interactions and discussions with local students and community members, participants are expected to develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.
“We want our international students to immerse themselves in the unique culture of Bengkulu. Participating in activities such as learning to make ‘besurek‘ batik and trying traditional games like ‘egrang batok kelapa‘ (coconut shell stilts) and ‘bentengan‘ (a traditional game) allow them to gain a deeper appreciation for our local heritage,” said Onsardi.
UMB is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for international students.
“We want UMB to be a second home for international students who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Indonesia. We believe that the diverse natural and cultural resources of Bengkulu offer valuable opportunities for academic research and cultural exchange,” Onsardi added.
Meanwhile, Head of UMB International Office Andi Azhar expressed his enthusiasm about the growing interest of international students in the university’s programs.
“This short course is just the beginning. We plan to organize more such programs in the future,” said Andi.
Andi highlighted the mutual benefits of hosting international students.
“For UMB, it enhances our international reputation and visibility. For the students, it provides a valuable opportunity to learn about a new culture and develop their global perspectives,” said Andi.
UMB is committed to becoming a globally recognized university. To achieve this goal, the university offers scholarships to international students pursuing undergraduate programs and actively supports international collaborations and exchanges.
