MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Becak Listrik (Betrik) 1912, an electric pedicab launched by the Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment (MPM), is the result of years of applied research by Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD). This initiative aims to promote sustainable transportation while supporting local drivers.
Rector of UAD Muchlas MT explained that research on the Betrik 1912 started in 2018, and the vehicle was already in use during the 48th Muhammadiyah Congress (Muktamar) in Surakarta in 2022. To enhance its functionality, UAD is now working on establishing charging stations in Yogyakarta, particularly around Jl. K.H. Ahmad Dahlan.
“We are developing a charging station, and I believe it will not be too difficult to implement,” said Muchlas in the official launch of Betrik 1912 at Hotel SM Malioboro, Yogyakarta, on Thursday, March 13.
As a Professor of Vocational Technology, Muchlas highlighted the intelligence and creativity of Indonesian students in research and innovation. However, he pointed out that securing funding remains a challenge.
Betrik 1912 will soon be upgraded with additional features, including battery indicators, travel distance estimations, and real-time charge tracking. Plans are also in place to add entertainment features for passengers.
“Right now, it’s still version 1.0 without a microcontroller. In version 1.1, we will enhance its features, and by version 2, we hope to introduce an online booking system for Betrik in Yogyakarta,” explained Muchlas.
With this system, passengers will be able to book a ride digitally, eliminating the need to find a pedicab manually. The goal is to make Betrik 1912 more accessible to both locals and tourists.
“UAD is committed to ensuring that its research produces practical benefits for society,” he added.
Currently, Betrik 1912 is classified as a prototype, but it is moving toward full commercialization. This marks an important step in UAD’s mission to turn academic research into real-world solutions.
In addition to Betrik 1912, UAD is also developing the Merapi Missile in collaboration with PT. Dahana. This anti-aircraft defense system has gained national recognition and was praised by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto during his visit to UAD on July 14, 2023.
