The First Day of Ramadan 1448 AH Falls on February 8, 2027

The First Day of Ramadan 1448 AH Falls on February 8, 2027

According to the Unified Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT), the first day of Ramadan 1448 AH will fall on Monday, February 8, 2027. This determination follows the principle of a global calendar that unifies the beginning of lunar months for Muslims worldwide. Differences in time zones and geographical locations do not warrant different dates as long as the agreed calendar criteria have been met.

Astronomical data indicate that the conjunction preceding the end of Sha’ban 1448 AH will occur on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at 15:56:07 UTC. However, the global calendar criteria will not be met on the day of conjunction, the required conditions will only be fulfilled on Sunday, February 7, 2027, in Darwin, Australia.

Astronomical Criteria Determine the Start of Ramadan

In the city, located in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sun will set at 18:47:59 local time, or 09:17:59 UTC. At that moment, the geocentric altitude of the Moon will be at +5° 54′ 45″, with a geocentric elongation of 8° 14′ 19″.

These figures relate to the astronomical criteria used by KHGT to determine the beginning of lunar months. The calendar requires a minimum geocentric elongation of 8 degrees and a minimum geocentric lunar altitude of 5 degrees before 00:00 UTC.

The fulfillment of both parameters at a location on Earth serves as the basis for determining the beginning of a lunar month globally. Under this principle, the new month does not have to wait until the crescent meets the criteria in every country or becomes visible simultaneously around the world.

A Global Calendar Beyond Local Crescent Sightings

This principle highlights a fundamental difference between a global calendar and methods of determining the beginning of a month based on local observations. Under KHGT, observations from a particular location form part of global astronomical data rather than serving as geographical boundaries that determine when all Muslims enter a new month.

Once the data met the established criteria, the new month begins simultaneously worldwide. This approach aims to provide certainty in determining the timing of religious observances while establishing an Islamic calendar suitable for civil life and long-term planning.

Special Provisions for Global Calendar Consistency

KHGT also includes exceptions for certain astronomical conditions. One scenario concerns a conjunction occurring in New Zealand before dawn, followed by the fulfillment of imkan rukyat parameters in mainland America. This provision takes into account New Zealand’s position in the easternmost region covered by the calendar calculations and the Americas’ position in the western region.

This exception forms part of the calendar’s mechanism for maintaining continuity in determining the beginning of lunar months globally when astronomical conditions near the transition between calendar days require special consideration.

With the calendar parameters fulfilled on Sunday, February 7, 2027, KHGT designates Monday, February 8, 2027, as the first day of Ramadan 1448 AH. This determination places astronomical calculations within a calendar framework oriented toward unifying time for Muslims worldwide.
