EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Muhammadiyah has condemned the Israeli military’s interception and detention of members of the international humanitarian mission Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 bound for Gaza, including several Indonesian journalists participating in the voyage.
“Muhammadiyah strongly condemns every form of intervention that employs violence or the politics of violence, which ultimately harms all parties involved,” Haedar said while speaking to reporters after the 109th Anniversary Reception of ‘Aisyiyah at the Convention Hall of ‘Aisyiyah University of Yogyakarta on Tuesday (19/5).
Haedar emphasized that the journalists and humanitarian activists aboard the flotilla were not pursuing any political agenda. Instead, they were carrying out humanitarian work and journalistic duties aimed at amplifying the suffering of the Palestinian people.
“The journalists and humanitarian activists have no political interests whatsoever,” he stressed.
He also urged Israel not to act arbitrarily toward Palestinians or toward international humanitarian actors attempting to deliver aid and promote peace in Gaza.
“The Palestinian issue must not be confronted through actions that endanger those carrying humanitarian and peace missions,” he said.
Call for International Action
Haedar further called on the international community, including the United Nations, to take concrete measures against the continuing violence in Palestine.
According to him, prolonged warfare and conflict reflect the erosion of humanitarian values in modern global civilization. He argued that, after the devastation of the First and Second World Wars, the international community should have developed a stronger collective commitment to preventing war.
“The world should no longer regard war as a legitimate path toward resolving disputes,” he said.
Earlier, Israeli forces reportedly intercepted several vessels participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission in the eastern Mediterranean Sea en route to Gaza. The delegation included several Indonesian citizens, among them journalists from national media outlets covering the humanitarian mission.
