EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MEDAN – From its origins in Yogyakarta to its expansion across Indonesia, Muhammadiyah has grown into a global organization seeking to help build a new world order grounded in peace and justice.
Syafiq Mughni, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Board, made the remarks on Tuesday (22/9) during a training program on Progressive Islamic Diplomacy for Humanity, focusing on the protection of migrant workers, at Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatera (UMSU).
As Muhammadiyah works to contribute to a safer and more just world order, Syafiq praised the Muhammadiyah Central Board’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (LHKI), which helped organize the training.
“The demands of today’s world are very clear: Muhammadiyah must be present on the international stage. We should not remain an organization tucked away in a corner of the world. We must be an organization at the heart of the global currents,” he said.
In engaging with the global community, Syafiq said Muhammadiyah would continue to operate as a non-governmental organization (NGO), since it has never been a government organization.
“Its role is clearly different from that of the state. But the two can support and complement each other because we share the same aspiration: to realize the new world we envision, one based on a just and peaceful global order,” he said.
Looking at the world today and what lies ahead, Syafiq said Muhammadiyah faces increasingly complex challenges. We, however, cannot simply overlook those challenges. Muhammadiyah must take part in addressing them through a stronger presence and greater engagement in the international arena.
