MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SPAIN – Marking a landmark expansion in its global outreach, Muhammadiyah inaugurated its Special Branch in Spain on December 16, 2023.
Muhammadiyah special branches have been established in 30 countries, indicating a testament to its unwavering commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding of Progressive Islam on a global scale.
In his inaugural address, Haedar Nashir, President of Muhammadiyah, emphasized the pivotal role envisioned for these international branches. He identified them as “ambassadors” of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam), a distinct perspective within Islam that champions social justice, inclusivity, and advancement through scientific and technological exploration.
“Islam Berkemajuan,” Haedar explained, “represents a nuanced interpretation of Islam that actively contributes to the construction of a thriving and equitable society. It bridges the gap between tradition and modern-day challenges, offering a relevant and progressive vision for Muslim communities worldwide.”
Drawing upon historical parallels, Haedar cited the Islamic Golden Age as a period of exemplary fusion between religious values and intellectual progress. He lauded the scientific, artistic, and cultural advancements fostered during this era, highlighting how Islam transcended mere faith and worship to encompass societal development.
With this historical backdrop in mind, Dr. Nashir urged the Muhammadiyah Spain branch to actively engage with Muslim communities and shed light on the multifaceted nature of Islam. He called upon them to showcase Islam as a religion of peace, tolerance, and compassion, one that champions social justice and actively pursues the betterment of humanity.
The inauguration of PCIM of Spain branch signifies a strategic step towards amplifying the organization’s message of Progressive Islam. As Haedar aptly stated, “We must demonstrate to the world that Islam is not a monolithic entity, but rather a rich tapestry woven with diverse interpretations and approaches.”
Muhammadiyah’s dedication to nurturing interfaith dialogue and promoting shared values through its international network positions it as a vital contributor to fostering a more harmonious and peaceful global landscape. The organization’s unwavering commitment to education, social work, and intellectual discourse makes it a beacon of hope for those seeking a progressive and socially impactful interpretation of Islam.
