MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir is recognized as one of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims 2025.
This biennial recognition, initiated by The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (MABDA) in 2009, honors Muslim figures who have made significant contributions in various fields such as academia, business, science and technology, and social welfare.
Since being appointed as the President of Muhammadiyah in 2015, Haedar has committed to expanding the movement’s role in providing quality, inclusive, and comprehensive services through its various institutions. Besides, Muhammadiyah under Haedar’s leadership gained global recognition, such as the Zayed Award in February 2024.
Haedar expressed his commitment to strengthening international cooperation, especially in fostering universal brotherhood and humanitarian efforts.
“We will continue to enhance cooperation with various parties at the global level, particularly in the role of universal brotherhood and humanity, especially those that prioritize wisdom, justice, values, and independent and moderate characters in the world,” said Haedar.
Haedar emphasized Muhammadiyah historical commitment to human brotherhood since its establishment in 1912. The organization’s inclusive approach, grounded in the Al-Ma’un theology, has fostered a history of moderate Islamic practices that promote tolerance, humanitarianism, and peaceful coexistence.
Under Haedar’s leadership, Muhammadiyah has expanded its humanitarian efforts through the establishment of educational institutions, healthcare centers, social services, economic empowerment, and community empowerment. Muhammadiyah named those actions “Muhammadiyah for All”
“In eastern regions of Indonesia with the majority of non-Muslims, Muhammadiyah established inclusive institutions, including four universities in Papua and two in NTT. These initiatives aim to foster social integration among diverse communities, who are mostly Christians and Catholics,” said Haedar.
On the global stage, Muhammadiyah has been actively involved in conflict resolution efforts, such as in the Southern Philippines and Southern Thailand. The organization has also implemented humanitarian programs in Rohingya and Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
“Muhammadiyah has also established a school in Beirut for Palestinian children and a school in Rakhine for Rohingya children. All of this is driven by a sense of humanity and the awareness that, in the modern world, all human beings have the right to a happy life and to live side by side peacefully without discrimination, suffering, and oppression,” said Haedar.
