MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANJARMASIN – American futurologist John Naisbitt predicts that the current dominant Western civilization will slowly but surely be replaced by another more advanced civilization, possibly from the East or others including Indonesia.
Anticipating a potential shift in global power, Muhammadiyah Chairman Anwar Abbas urged Indonesian Muslims to be prepared. He particularly emphasized the importance of strengthened unity between Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the nation’s two largest Islamic organizations
Indonesia, with its vast potential, is well-positioned to become a developed nation. However, Abbas warns against complacency. He emphasizes the need for proactive engagement in shaping the future course of global civilization.
As a Muslim-majority nation, Indonesian Muslims have a vital role to play. Abbas highlights the significance of Muhammadiyah and NU, the two largest Islamic organizations. He suggests their combined influence could be a decisive factor in the nation’s future, but only if they stand united.
“Maintaining Ukhuwah Islamiyah, the bond of brotherhood within Islam, between Muhammadiyah and NU is crucial. A united Muhammadiyah and NU, even without complete economic control, can still be a determining force for our nation’s future,” emphasized Anwar Abbas in Fajr preaching on Saturday (April 20) at Masjid Al Jihad, Banjarmasin.
According to Abbas, a practical step towards fostering unity between Muhammadiyah and NU is for their members to prioritize buying products from fellow Muslims whenever possible. This seemingly small action, he argues, can have a significant cumulative impact.
To achieve greater economic self-reliance and solidify their role as leading Islamic organizations, Abbas called on Muhammadiyah and NU to establish their own factories and service providers. Initially catering to the needs of the Muslim community, these ventures could then expand to serve the broader population.
Abbas grounded his call for unity in Islamic principles. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the “Rope of Allah SWT,” a concept signifying Islamic unity and following God’s will. Abbas stressed that maintaining this unity, particularly during politically divisive times, is a core Islamic tenet.
“In essence, we Muslims find ourselves caught in a situation designed by others, ultimately bearing the brunt of the consequences,” Abbas concluded.
