MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA– Central Board of Muhammadiyah’s Waqf Utilization Council (MPW PP Muhammadiyah) has intensified efforts to professionalize waqf management by organizing a training and competency certification program for Nazhir, or waqf manager.
The program, titled Nazhir Competency Certification Scheme 2: Management and Development of Waqf Assets, took place on January 24-25, 2026, in Jakarta. It was followed by a competency assessment on January 30-31, 2026 in Yogyakarta.
Mashuri Masyhuda, Secretary of MPW PP Muhammadiyah, said the certification marked a critical step toward improving Muhammadiyah’s waqf governance.
“This certification is expected to become the starting point for establishing a Muhammadiyah Nazhir Forum,” Mashuri said. “Through this forum, we aim to build an ecosystem of Nazhir who are increasingly professional and progressive in managing and developing waqf assets.”
He emphasized that future challenges in waqf governance would grow more complex. Therefore, Muhammadiyah must strengthen Nazhir’s capacity continuously and at all organizational levels.
Training, Assessment, and Core Competencies.
This program involved 36 participants drawn from Muhammadiyah Waqf Councils at the provincial, regional, and branch levels. Moreover, the initiative forms part of Muhammadiyah’s broader strategy to enhance human resources capable of managing waqf assets professionally, transparently, and sustainably.
The competency assessment was conducted by the Muhammadiyah Professional Certification Department (LSP Muhammadiyah) using a portfolio-based scheme. Certified assessors, including Jarot Wahyudi, M. Shulthoni, Kurnia, and Dede Haris Sumarno, evaluated participants comprehensively.
Under Scheme 2, participants were to demonstrate applied competencies. These included formulating waqf policies and strategies, designing programs, preparing budgets, building partnerships, managing risk, conducting monitoring and evaluation, and producing accountability reports.
Responding to Indonesia’s Waqf Potential
Mashuri also highlighted Indonesia’s vast waqf potential, particularly cash waqf. According to the Indonesian Waqf Board, national cash waqf potential could reach approximately Rp180 trillion.
“This enormous potential requires Nazhir who possesses not only normative religious understanding,” he said. “But also strong managerial and strategic capabilities.
Ultimately, MPW PP Muhammadiyah hopes the program will produce certified, adaptive, and professional Nazhir. In turn, Muhammadiyah’s waqf management is expected to deliver greater benefit to both society and the nation.
